Kuzikus
Wildlife Reserve |
Kuzikus (white thorn)
is a private wildlife reserve that has been selected by the Namibian
government to preserve and protect species. The vast diversity of
free-living wildlife (most is conservation dependent in IUCN red list) is
the major attraction on KUZIKUS: there are over 3000 individuals from more
than 20 larger animal species such as the Common Eland (Taurotragus oryx),
the Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), the Gemsbok (Oryx gazella), the
Hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), Gnu (Connochaetes gnou and C. taurinus)
, the Blesbok (Damaliscus albifrons), the Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis),
the Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris), the Common Duicker (Sylvicapra
grimmia), the Impala (Aepyceros melampus), the Burchell’s Zebra (Equus
quagga burchellii), the Ostrich (Struthio camelus australis) and the Giraffe
(Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa).
Pangolins (Manidae), aardvarks (Orycteropus afer), Bat-eared foxes (Otocyon
megalotis), aardwolfs (Proteles cristatus) as well as Rock Pigeons (Columba
livi) and an impressive array of other birds are also home to the game
reserve. KUZIKUS puts importance to a free-living natural world without the
disturbance of fences or domesticated animals such as cattle and sheep. The
great opportunity to interact with nature directly without being in a car,
especially in the Kalahari, is an exceptional experience. You will be
overwhelmed by the landscape of high camel-thorn trees, large saltlakes and
red dunes and by the endless peace of the savannah.
The south-western Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis bicornis) is critically
endangered (IUCN red list), facing an extremely high risk of extinction in
the wild and establishment feel lucky to have obtained a special permission to renaturalise these rare creatures on KUZIKUS. This offers you a good
opportunity to see the Black Rhinoceros in the wild. KUZIKUS is secluded
from touristy routes and roadways, neither fences nor public roads
transverse the area, and therefore the location of KUZIKUS provides optimal
conditions for the Black Rhinoceros to be undisturbed and freely reproduce.
Experience Africa: The diversity of game on KUZIKUS can almost be
compared to a usual national park. In most national parks, however, tourists
are not allowed to leave the vehicle, which hinders the direct interaction
with the nature. Being in nature, acting in nature: The philosophy on
KUZIKUS is to experience Africa directly. host guests should discover the
smell and noises, the peace and freedom while wandering through the bush.
Your initial fear will be taken quickly with the help of host
nature-enthusiastic crew.
Therefore establishment also offer a Kalahari wilderness course, which can also be
shortened to one or two days (minimum two persons). The game also approaches
the waterholes near the farmhouse and thus can be quietly observed.
In the evenings establishment set a campfire for you to gather around for tales in
Africa. The excellent accommodation (2 double rooms, 2 smaller double rooms
or single rooms with en suite bathroom), lovely swimming pool with sauna and
fitness room, fine cuisine, recreational and leisure facilities and
interesting programme has gained KUZIKUS the highest and the top three star
award by the Hotel Association of Namibia. However, establishment do not offer camping
sites.
You can reach KUZIKUS via the tarmac road C23 to Dordabis where the tarmac road ends. You will travel the next 90 km on a good dirt (gravel) road. At the junction to Leonardville leave the C23 and drive 1 km on the 51 (Careful! Very sharp left bend), now take a right to the D1423 and travel another 15km until you come to a sign post KUZIKUS, follow sign posts. A small farm road will lead you to KUZIKUS after about 15km.
Hosts recommend a stay of minimum 3 nights. Except on the day of the arrival or the date of departure every afternoon a game drive is included.
