Namib-Naukluft National Park, Atlantic West Coast, Namibia
The legendary Skeleton Bay (or Donkey Bay) surf spot is famous for the longest sand bottomed left hand wave in the world where 6 barrels on one wave is not quite usual. The wave is left hand sandbar/point break, bottom is sand. The long draining left-hand wave with almost 2 km of majestic draining heavy, fast and the best barrels in ankle deep water. The wave is very fickle when it comes to the swell size and direction, it starts working once the southern hemisphere moves into the winter months (from May to September) and then it needs a big long-period groundswell to wrap in at just the right angle. When the swell gets big enough, it normally lasts for a short time only, possibly up to two days, rarely three days.
Skeleton
Bay is must-do surf location in southern Africa, west coast of Namibia, one the “Top Ten waves to
ride before you die”. This wave is not for the heart-fainted requiring an
advanced level surfing skill and it should not be attempted by the beginners
or even intermediate surfers. The best time to visit is May to October,
winter time in Namibia.
The nearest airport to Skeleton Bay is
Walvis Bay International Airport. The
cold Benguela current is responsible for a thick fog that covers west coast
for most of the year. Namibian west coast is famous for
many shipwrecks that litter
it. Skeleton Coast Park is located further up the coast, north of
Henties Bay.
