Omaha
Guest Farm |
Experience true farm life in
Namibia at Omaha! Omaha Guest Farm is situated at the foot of Mount Etjo only a 2-hour
drive NW from Windhoek. Omaha is conveniently located en route between
Windhoek and a number of Namibia's primary tourism destinations: Etosha and
Waterberg National Parks, Damaraland, Bushmanland, Kavango Region and the
Caprivi Strip. “Omaha” in the Herero language means "the place where one can
live".
A large part of the farm is taken up by Mt Etjo, a geologically unique feature
of the Namibian landscape. Mount Etjo is an erosional relic dating to the time
of Gondwanaland, 500 million years ago. The mountain is a narrow plateau 16 km
long with a maximum width of 3 km, standing 2086 m above sea level at its
highest point. Mount Etjo is capped with a layer of hard sandstone, measuring up
to 70 meters deep. The saddle of the mountain forms the watershed between the
Omaruru River running west to the Atlantic Ocean and the Omatako River that
runs to the northeast into the Kavango River, historically draining into the
Indian Ocean by the Zambezi River.
Earthen dams have been built on the farm to retard erosion caused by the
enormous amount of water rushing down Mount Etjo after rainfalls. The dams
provide drinking water for game as well as for the domestic animals on the
farm. Indigenous free-ranging game and a very diverse bird fauna, including
waterfowl, are attracted to the impoundments. Warthog, Kudu, Oryx, Damara
Dik-dik, Steenbok, Duiker, Jackal and Suricates are often seen, while leopard,
cheetah, jackals, hartebeest, springbok and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra also
occur.
Rhenish mission station ruins at Waterberg:
Cattle, goats and sheep are farmed at Omaha. Leopard and cheetah occur
naturally on the farm, so calves and lambs have to stay in kraals at the house
for about three months to minimize their predation. Lambs are protected by an
Anatolian shepherd dog native to Turkey.
