Crocodile Farm Otjiwarongo | Photo album |
Crocodile Farm (or Ranch, as called by some) is located in Henk Willems Street in Otjiwarongo, northern Namibia. Quite a new attraction in Otjiwarongo is the crocodile farm near the eastern border of town, where you can observe and photograph crocodiles at close range and learn about the breeding and eating habits of these majestic reptiles. The ranch exports the skins, but sells the meat locally. Meet, photograph and learn more about these remarkable animals and browse around the gift shop. Restaurant serves crocodile meat dishes as well as other meals from an extensive menu.
Otjiwarongo Crocodile Farm
(Ranch) was founded in 1985 starting off with a breeding herd of 60 adult Nile
crocodiles. It is the only crocodile farm in Namibia at present serving as an
important conservational tourist attraction with the motto: sustaining by
entertaining.
While safeguarding the Namibian Crocodile population, the farm also recycle
waste from meat, fish or poultry by using it to feed its crocodile population.
Crocodile Farming is one of the pillars of the commercial aquaculture industry
in Namibia and in addition, provides a livelihood for many young and aspiring
entrepreneurs.
Crocodile skins of excellent quality are highly valued for the fashion industry
due to the ever increasing demand for exotic leather products.
Crocodile Farm's Wi-Fi infrastructure was upgraded in 2019, it is now features
an extended range for the Wi-Fi so all visitors can browse the Internet in most
parts of farm's facilities.
Crocodile meat Is clean and green
- here is why:
Apart from being a delicacy, crocodile meat is also sustainable due to low
methane emissions. The production of crocodile meat only emits 4 kg of carbon
dioxide per 50 g of meat produced. In comparison, the production of the same
amount of beef emits up to 35 kg of carbon dioxide. Therefore, crocodile meat is
regarded as low carbon food.
Crocodile tours are open seven days a week, to visitors of all ages including
minors and can be done during business hours. The tour lasts about 20-30 minutes
during which you are accompanied by one of an experienced guides who will tell
you all about farm's Nile crocodiles.
