Magotho Camp, Moremi Game Reserve
Magotho Camp - Khwai Community Camp is located around 22 kilometres east of the Khwai Village along the main Moremi - Savuti Road near the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana.
The fifteen camping sites are set in the shade of camelthorn trees which grow abundantly in this area. The camp ground is divided into a northern and a southern part. The camping sites are very basic, but there are ablution facilities available. Guests are advised to bring everything along to be fully self-sufficient, water in particular. This is a large camping area.
There are ablution facilities available, but only cold water. Each stand has a concrete fire pit and ours also had a braai (barbecue) built in brick. There is a central deposit cage for rubbish.
Camp has a reception office on site, built right in the front on one of the old sites on the Kwai River. The staff allocate sites, receive fees and sell firewood. The camp ground derives its name from the Setswana for Acacia Erioloba or Camel Thorn - these towering giants grow in the area and provide shade to the camping sites. Elephant often wander quietly through the camp allowing visitors the unique opportunity to observe them close up. The camping ground is divided into two locations: Campground 1 is to the north and has campsites numbered 9 to 15, Campground 2 is to the south and has campsites numbered 1 to 8. There are very many hippos in the river and many elephants. Occasionally a leopard, lions and a pack of hyenas on a kill. This place has great location just by Khwai River, where you can watch hippos and lots of birds. Sites are big and comfortable with easy access to ablutions.
Overnight campers are strongly warned not to move around during the night due to presence of hippos and elephants in the area. In general wildife can move freely through the camp. Sightings of crocodiles, hippos, elephants, leopards, antelopes and hyenas are excellent.
Location: 25 km from Moremi Game Reserve North Gate. Access from Maun, around 2 hours drive: distance is 135 km.
