Aus - Namibia is the place to be!
"Hotel Aus, Namibia" is situated on the B4 road connecting Helmeringhausen
(123 km), Keetmanshoop (220 km), Rosh Pinah (160 km) and Lüderitzbucht (123
km). The Bahnhof Hotel is located in the palmtree lined, tarred main road of
Aus, opposite of the old railway station and the only filling station.
In the 4 years since its re-opening under the present managemant, the Bahnhof
Hotel Aus - Namibia has earned in three consecutive years a Bronze Award for
Excellence from the Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) , based on
independent assessments from the guests and tourists.
In 2011 the Bahnhof Hotel Aus achieved the "Silver Award" in the Category
"Hotel"!
History
Aus played a major role in the development of the railway line between
Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop, because it had abundant water and also gave access
to the inland plateau through the mountains. Once the railway line was
completed in 1906, Aus quickly developed into a major traffic hub during the
German time, with two family-style hotels, of which only one (with the fitting
name of “ Bahnhof Hotel “) has survived. The Bahnhof Hotel was initially built
in 1906 and has been in the hands of the Lubowski family since the late
seventies A fire destructed the the hotel in 1948 and a brick construction
replaced the wooden structure of earlier times. With different leaseholders
the hotel experienced varying heydays, until in 2005 a group of five partners
took over the business. The building was given a complete makeover and 13
stylish rooms with modern en-suite amenities were the results of these
efforts.
New management and staff treat visitors and guests to an a là carte menu
consisting of local cuisine with international flair and selected wines or
alternatively always freshly prepared light lunches and homemade fresh bread
and cakes. Sundowners can be enjoyed on the sundeck or in the cosy lounge in
front of the fireplace or just have a drink in the historic bar.
The reason precipitating the takeover of the hotel by the present owners, is
the Namib Huib Plateau Park, situated 30 kilometers south of Aus and of which
they are stakeholders as well. This future park, which is in the process of
being established, extends over 173 000 hectares and borders the Sperrgebiet
for 90 kilometers. Obviously such a venture necessitates the provision for
accommodation facilities and therefore the hotel presented an ideal
possibility for a first profit center and stepping stone for the development
of the envisaged park.
Accommodation
In total, the hotel accommodation consists now of 21 tastefully decorated rooms
with a total of 44 beds, after new rooms were added by the middle of 2010.
The old 13 rooms are fully equipped with en-suite facilities, the old wooden
floors have been retained and restored, complimenting the elegant flair of the
subtle yet simple decor. A wheelchair-friendly room as well as a family room
(sleeping 4) add up to a bed capacity of 28 at the old hotel structure.
The comfortable dining hall, the cozy lounge with its traditional fire place,
the restored bar and a sheltered beer garden elicit from many unsuspecting
visitors an appreciative exclamation of surprise.
By the end of July 2010 another reshaping milestone has been achieved. On the
adjacent property eight additional rooms were built augmenting the overnight
capacities to 21 rooms and 44 beds.
The existing old building was refurbished to house an additional dining hall
with kitchenette, which can double up as a conference venue for approximately 50
persons. Other features include wireless ADSL connectivity and a branch of a
well known upmarket souvenir shop.
Restaurant
An extensive à la carte menu as well as freshly prepared light meals, a
selection of excellent wines, home-baked bread and cakes, our historic bar and
sundeck, a sheltered beer garden as well as a lounge with a cozy fireplace are
inviting the weary traveler to a remarkable stay at Bahnhof Hotel Aus.
The menu and kitchen are getting lots of appreciation from an ever growing group
of pleasantly satisfied customers.
Our staff members are all originating from Aus and are so dedicated to the
success of the hotel, that the customers can virtually feel it, if the
enthusiastic remarks about our service are any yardstick to go by.
The Restaurant, the Sundeck and the Beer garden at Hotel Aus are also meeting
points for a lot of travelers and self drive tourists on their way to or from
Lüderitz, from visiting the "Feral Horses" nearby or exploring the amazing
landscape of the "Huib Plateau Park".
