Uis was once an
important tin mining town, but since the principal mine closed in 1990, the
town has lost past significance. Tourism is
replacing tin as the mainstay of the economy; there are a couple of new
places to stay in town, and a fabulous new campsite in the Ugab riverbed
just off the road to the White Lady. Although small-scale tin mining has
taken place in the area since the first half of the 20th century, it was not
until 1951 that a full-scale mining operation started. In 1958 the South
African mining giant ISCOR took over the mining rights and built the town,
which flourished until the mine's closure shortly after independence. Today
local miners, with overseas donor assistance, are once again mining tin,
tantalite and tourmaline on a small scale.
