Swartfontein Mountain and Desert Guest Lodge |
Swartfontein Mountain &
Desert Guest Lodge is situated within the Namib Spreetshoogte
Nature Reserve, 180 km. South-west of Windhoek, at the summit of the Spreetshoogte Pass, overlooking one of the most beautiful and
majestic landscapes of Namibia.
This traditional settlers house, whose oldest part was built at the beginning of
the 20th century by a German soldier, has a distinctive German look with its
rounded windows decorated with geraniums, red corrugated iron roof and wide
veranda. It is surrounded by a vast lawn, almost an oasis in the middle of very
arid land.
At
Swartfontein you stay in relaxed and well-fed comfort surrounded by
unspoiled bush in all directions. You have the feeling of being way deep in
Africa, close to the land and far from the tourist crowds.
The house is relaxed and spacious. There are comfortable armchairs on the
veranda and on the lawn, under a sunshade. In the cosy living room and dining
room an eclectic mix of antique Italian furniture, big leather couches, family
portraits, ancient paintings and objects collected all over the world, makes
this place quite unique. There is also a large library with more than 1,000
books in different languages on various subjects including wildlife, birds,
nature conservation and African history.
Up to 16
guests can be accommodated in 8 well-appointed suites with, named after 8
African deserts. Each suite is individually decorated with fabrics, furniture
and artifacts collected in different parts of the continent. Electricity and hot
water are available 24 hours a day thanks to solar energy.
The owners and managers of Swartfontein are Silvia and Roberto
Scarafia, a warm and friendly Italian couple, in love with Africa, whose
major commitment is the preservation of the very fragile and sensitive
eco-system of the Nature Reserve surrounding the lodge. They have a
thorough knowledge and deep understanding of the land and its animals and they
are eager to share this with their guests.
Swartfontein offers many possibilities of entertainment to its visitors.
Most activities centre on experiencing the wildlife and the diverse scenery of
the Nature Reserve. Guests are taken on game drives or photographic
safaris in a 4x4 vehicle, or on guided bird, game and flora walks. For
the more adventurous ones a day walk in the wildest parts of the Reserve
in search of the very protected and elusive mountain zebra can be organised on
request.
One of the
highlights of the stay at the lodge is a sundowner at the top of the escarpment,
admiring a breathtaking view over the mountains, the plains and the red dunes of
the desert in the distance, while sipping a glass of chilled sparkling wine.
Prior arrangements can be made with Silvia and Roberto for day
trips to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon, the Naukluft Mountains
and the Namib Desert. For those who want to experience something unique,
a flight over the desert or day flights to the Fish River Canyon and
Luderitz or the Kaokoland and the Skeleton Coast can be
organised directly from the private airstrip of the lodge.
After a busy or relaxed day, guests join Silvia and Roberto for
meals in the old dining room, in the heart of the house. Food is
memorable: a blend of Italian and local dishes prepared with natural ingredients
from the lodge's vegetable garden, home made bread and ice cream, an excellent
selection of South African wines (some of which are exclusively bottled for the Namib Spreetshoogte Reserve) and a very special Italian "espresso"
coffee, transform the meal in a delightful "gourmet" experience. Conversation at
the communal table is lively, and you have the feeling of getting to know your
hosts and their other guests.
English, French, Italian and Portuguese are fluently spoken at Swartfontein.
In any case, the warm welcome and the friendly atmosphere are a universal
language, fully understood by all the guests who seem to appreciate it very
much.
