Okapuka Ranch Windhoek

Main accommodation - central region

1986...was the year, when 14000 ha of land changed owners hands; it was the time, when Fritz and Monika Flachberger purchased the plains 30 km North of Windhoek, afoot the Otjihavera mountains.
A few cattle and a farmhouse built in 1917, were the main attractions of the area. Little did one know, back then, what a vision and true pioneers' spirit would still accomplish.

1987...cattle was gradually faded out and gave way to the first game in the area. The same year saw the end of construction works at the mountain lodge, which, with its' 4 rooms, conference facility, wooden adorned bar lounge and open fire place, is granting the visitor a breathtaking view of the spectacular landscape stretching towards the horizon.

1988 - 1994... fences were completed, roads were built, camps were constructed and even more game was introduced to the bush lands.

Unique setting, unique meals ...

The "Hyena bar", carved from wood of the Camel thorn tree and located along the edge of a huge thatch roof dome, offers a noble range of ancient sherries, divine brandies and selected wines. It is pleasure pure, to sit and watch the bush rising towards the mountains, while enjoying a favourite drink - to get together prior to a meal, or afterwards, or simply to relax and to enjoy the scenery at any time.
The restaurant, separated from the bar by a water- and rock cascade, offers a variety of specialties; unusual local game dishes, creative starters and naughty desserts - all prepared with the particular touch of the settlers' cooking philosophy, and as such, according to recipes handed down from generation to generation.
Sampling our cuisine, one will find the cozy, candle-lit atmosphere centering around the open fire place, while, at the same time, gazing across the green grass of the park, relishing the dreamlike view of antelope herds grazing.

Comfort, style and a glorious view ...

Set along the edge of the park are 16 thatched roof rooms, specially designed to ensure comfort and luxury, while remaining almost invisible from a distance, as great architectural care has been taken to blend the rooms in with the surrounding bush.
Equipped with en-suite bathroom/ toilet, telephone, coffee making facilities, mini bar fridge and open terrace, the rooms' walls are adorned with paintings by the well renowned artist von Aschenborn, and tastefully laid out carpets, made from wool of the local Karakul sheep, evoke the grandeur of times long gone by.
Another 4 rooms with balcony form part of the mountain lodge. Furnished with cane and wall to wall carpets, the rooms feature en-suite bathrooms with toilet/ shower, satellite TV and all other facilities of the Park rooms. A bonus of course, is the spectacular view of the African landscape below, gently rolling towards the horizon.

A king and his kingdom
in a world of excitement, adventure and spirit ...

Gently rolling plains and bush land savannah extend towards the horizon. The land afoot the Otjihavera mountains is home to a large variety of birds and mammals. Herds of antelope roam the bush, the hooves of Zebra and Giraffe pound the soil, rhinoceroses hide in the dense grass, and in deep, mystical blue waters, reflecting the purple and orange sky, crocodiles hold their own. The air vibrates, as the majestic roar echoes from the plains, as here, at Okapuka, the lion is the king of beasts - as untamed and wild as Africa itself.
In such terrain, Okapuka is offering a multitude of activities for its' visitors to experience. Most of the tours are conducted under the guidance of experienced Rangers, who will gladly share their knowledge of Africa's Fauna and Flora. Some of the activities however, are for visitors to attempt on their own. But whatever the tour, whichever the choice, it is there to be enjoyed!
