Gunn's Bush Camp Maun

Gun's Bush Camp is a secluded
private campsite on a palm studded island in the Okavango Delta, overlooking
Chiefs Island in the Moremi Game Reserve. Access is by a 20 minute scenic flight
by light aircraft from Maun over the south-western Delta. You will be met at the
private airstrip by our camp porters and taken to camp by foot (10 minute easy
walk) or mokoro (water levels depending). On arrival at Bush camp, camp's friendly
and helpful managers will show you around camp and spend some time with you,
going over any questions you may have. Bush Camp offers an affordable Delta
experience for those travellers wishing to explore the true Delta.
There are 2 levels of accommodation:
Accommodation: Gunn's Main Camp accommodation is in 7 luxury meru tents
with en-suite bathrooms, there is a combination of twin and double-bedded
tents, so please request your preference. In addition there is an elevated
honeymoon suite under thatch with a private balcony. Contact our Sales Office
for details on honeymoon packages. All tents have lighting provided by
generated electricity. Towels and a laundry service are included in your stay.
Inclusions: En-suite Tented accommodation, meals, selected local beverages,
activities and National Park fees.
Grade A - Mini Meru tents on platforms with a balcony equipped with
proper beds as guest soaps and shampoos. Shared ablution facilities between the
7 tents, separate from the others. Guest capacity 14.
Grade B - 2 man dome tents on platforms equipped with bedrolls. Shared
ablution facilities. Please bring your own towels and toiletries. Guest
capacity 60.
CAMP FACILITIES: There is a platform deck overlooking the river and the
cave bar which is built on a termite hill. Meals will be served with other
guests in the dining room; recently renovated in the same style as the cave
bar. Relax in the heat of the day under the shady trees or take a refreshing
dip in the pool. There are shared bathroom facilities with running hot/cold
water and flush toilets. Facilities in camp include a restaurant, cash bar,
shady campsites, game viewing deck, barbecue facilities, swimming pool, and
dry goods store with basic non-perishable provisions, flush toilets, and hot
water showers. Activities focus on mokoro / game walk excursions on the
nearby game abundant flood plains with experienced poler/guides. Your
wilderness experience starts as you leave camp on Mokoro (canoe) and are
gently poled through lily and reed lined waterways, stopping for a guided walk
where you may enjoy sightings of the larger carnivores, plains game, elephant,
buffalo, and perhaps the endangered wild dog. Birders observations have
included two hundred and fifty species including the rare Pels Fishing Owl and
endangered Wattled Crane. Camping options are flexible and limited only to
your sense of adventure. You may combine any number of days and nights at the
Bush Camp and wilderness camps, or as a reward after roughing it in the
wilderness, you may consider a combination package to include luxury
Gunn’s Camp. Hosts will provide all of your equipment for your wilderness
experience and at the bush camp. In the presence of your poler/guide, you will
explore the area in a mokoro (dugout canoe) - silently pushing through the
winding channels, and also on foot, walking with your guide. This area is rich
in birdlife and you may encounter game at a close range - Uninterrupted by
vehicles, this is a unique way to observe game.
Communication: Radio access to Maun.
The Facts: Location/Access: Gunn's Camp is accessed by a light aircraft
(generally a Cessna 206) from Maun, the flight is approximately 30 minutes
over the south-western Delta. It is also possible to fly from other areas of
Botswana. There is a strict luggage
restriction on the flight, 10kg plus hand luggage, in soft manageable bags
(back packs, rucksacks, duffle bags are highly recommended, please do not
bring hard suitcases). Excess luggage can be stored in our Maun office whilst
you are in the delta.
The delta buffalo, the elusive wild dog, hippo, crocodile and a variety of
plains game from zebra to lechwe. Gunn’s Camp is a renowned birders' paradise,
with over 240 species noted including the rare Pel’s Fishing Owl and the
endangered Wattled Crane. In the evenings as you relax in the main lodge;
reflections of treasured memories are cast in the glow of a spectacular
sunset. Activities are dependent on water levels and may be restricted Jan -
May.
Amenities: Elevated lounge and dining area, small library with
reference books, swimming pool, boma area and laundry service. Video batteries
can be recharged, an adaptor is provided at camp.
A Typical Day: A light breakfast or full cooked breakfast is served to
fit in with your activities. A morning activity is taken - as planned with
your guide/Camp Managers and return to camp for lunch and a siesta. Afternoon
tea is served, after which you can enjoy an afternoon activity until sunset,
where you return to camp as per the regulations of Moremi Game Reserve. A
three course dinner in the dinning room or a BBQ dinner at the campfire is
served and the evening can be enjoyed relaxing in the lounge or around the
campfire. It is also an option to take a full day trip with picnic lunch if
planned with the Camp Managers.
