Pomona and Bogenfels
Namibia is home of many forgotten
and abandoned places needing for exploration, and the Sperrgebiet is one of the
best examples of these. You can join guided tour as you can not self-drive in
this inhospitable area of Namib Desert and it really helps to book
someone who knows the way around. Your operator is going to collect you at your
Luderitz accommodation and
guide you for the whole day adventure.
After a long drive you reach famous Sperrgebiet - used to be a diamond area barred to all travellers. Access is strictly controlled and trespassers face imprisonment or heavy fines, although only five percent of the 26 000 square km area is still used for mining activities. Once you are through the park checkpoint, you experience the full impact of the vastness and sheer silence of this abandoned area. There are almost no human inhabitants in the Sperrgebiet up to now.
The train station is the first stop - once a busy point for dispatch of goods to and from Pomona. Rail was the only means of transport until 1917 when the first motor vehicle arrived in Sperrgebiet. Nowadays the tracks lie in ruin and the station itself is slowly decaying and disappearing under the sands of the Namib Desert.
Next stop is Pomona, once a bustling diamond town, it lies in ruin, with decaying buildings and rusting parts of machinery scattered about. Over 4 million carats of diamonds had left the area via Pomona by 1940 and since then have become scarcer. When the diamond supply dried up, production ceased and workers left, abandoning Pomona to the mercy of elements.
Tour ends at the Bogenfels, massive and most photographed rock arch over 50 m tall, standing s a testament to nature’s victory over man in the vastness of Namibia's Sperrgebiet.
