Third
Bridge Camp Site
Moremi Reserve |
Third Bridge (GPS: 3BRIDG) is located around 8 km from
Xakanaxa camp site, although driving takes about 18 km, depending on the route
used. It is advised to split available times visiting Third Bridge and Xakanaxa camp site.
Approaching from Xakanaxa you'll first see a wooden office, raised off the
ground and surmounted by a radio mast. Stop here to sign in before proceeding
slowly over the pole bridge. You'll see that the water's crystal clear as it
passes over the sandy bottom of the narrow waterway, but despite the
apparently impenetrable stands of papyrus all around, it's a dangerous place
to swim. People used to often bathe here, but there were regular attacks by
crocodiles, and hence the plethora of notices warning you against swimming.
Third Bridge site is quite large, and the pitches are spread out. There is an
ablution block, with two flush toilets and two showers for each sex. Outside
these are the two wood-fired 'Rhodesian' boilers and a water tower.
Third Bridge camp site is located on the Western side of Moremi Game Reserve along the off stream of Moanachira River. Third Bridge camp site can be accessed along a 58 km route in north-western direction through some diverse scenery across first and second bridge. Another route from the South gate goes through the Mopane forest 60 km long via Xakanaxa. Third Bridge area that boarders on the delta and Mboma Island enjoy heavy concentration of wildlife in the dry season. Third Bridge offers much more of the wilderness experience than most of Southern African camping grounds with unspoiled wilderness and top destination. Currently, a boat station development is underway to provide boat activities and transfers to Gxhobega & Gcudikwa lagoons where the heronry of migratory birds are located. The boat station will further provide means of transport for provision of camping facilities at the Wilderness sites namely; Gxhobega and Gcudikwa 1& 2.
