Location

Molema Bush Camp is located in the Tuli Block, in the easternmost corner of Botswana. This is a unique and historically significant location where the country meets its neighbours Zimbabwe and South Africa and at the confluence of two great rivers, the Limpopo and the Shashe.

Molema is situated on 6000 hectares of privately owned land immediately to the west of the Northern Tuli Molema Bush Camp Tuli Block, BotswanaGame Reserve which is soon to be incorporated into the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA).

Molema is very easily accessible from South Africa, being close to the border crossing at Platjan. It makes an ideal getaway or stopping off point for travellers between Botswana and South Africa.

The area is scenically very different to the rest of Botswana, with dominant basalt formations and large areas of dramatic sandstone hills and ridges, together with a network of (mostly dry) riverbeds and riverine forests as well as open grasslands and marshy areas.

From vantage points on top of the rock formations, the plains of Botswana stretch away to the north.

The area is home to a diverse range of wildlife, renowned for its Tuli elephants - the largest elephant population on private land in Africa, and is recognised as an Important Bird Area with over 350 species recorded.

The area is also fascinating from a historical perspective. Bushmen paintings provide a reminder of the area’s original inhabitants many thousands of years ago. Remains of ancient settlements relating to the Mapungubwe era (circa 1200-1270 AD) are dotted throughout the area. The area also played a role in Rhodes’ southern African empire-building and witnessed several conflicts during the Boer War.

Getting there

GPS Coordinates: S 22 16 747 E 28 57 370

PLEASE CONTACT CAMP PRIOR TO TRAVEL TO CHECK ON THE STATUS OF THE LIMPOPO & OTHER RIVERS SO THAT HOSTS CAN ADVISE THE BEST ROUTE AVAILABLE AT THE TIME.

Molema is around 500 km from both Johannesburg and Gaborone, with driving times around 5 and 6 hours respectively. The camp is around 4 hours from the northern gates of the Kruger National Park.

Driving from Johannesburg guests should follow the N1 to Polokwane then the R521 to Alldays. At Alldays take a right and immediately left, then next right and follow this dirt road to the Platjan border post. After the border, continue straight on to a T-junction where you turn right. Follow this road for 25 km until you see the Molema signboard on your right hand side. Molema is 3.8 km from this point.

Please note that the Limpopo River crossing at Platjan is on a 3m wide causeway. If the Limpopo River is flowing too strongly, it cannot be crossed - the alternative then is to drive down to Martin’s Drift which is approximately three hour’s drive from Molema.

Driving from Gaborone, guests should head to Selebi-Phikwe and then on to Bobonong. Keep to the main road in Bobonong until you reach a roundabout, where you turn right. Follow this road to a T-junction where you turn right to Mathathane. Continue on this road and turn left at a signboard reading ‘Mashatu 100km’. Follow this road passing Molalatau en route and continuing past the turning for Mathathane. After 62 km you will reach a T-junction, where you turn left onto a dirt road signed to Lentswe-le-Moriti. After about 5.6km you will see the Molema signboard on your right, and Molema is 3.8km from this point.

Border facilities: The closest border facilities for those arriving by road from South Africa are at Platjan, opening hours 06.00-18.00. There is a charge for a vehicle entry permit into Botswana.
