S.O.S. X-TREME SPENCER BAY – OYSTER CLIFFS – SYLVIA HILL
This new 4x4 route will take you through an area only a few diamond prospectors have explored some 80 years ago and we are proud to offer this product to our 4x4 enthusiasts for the first time ever!

ITINERARY
DAY 1
Departing
Luderitz
after a healthy breakfast, we leave the tarred road behind after approximately
25km. We cross the scenic Kowies Mountains and enter the difficult red dune belt
pretty early. This gives us time to find our ‘sand feet’ and right gears for the
vehicles as the going becomes tougher as we continue. Our first night we will
spend at ‘Blue Mountain’ where we pitch camp.
DAY 2
We travel through the coastal
dune belts towards Spencer Bay. En route we view the shipwreck ‘Otavi’, Saddle
Hill and Gibraltar. Our camp for the night will be set up at Spencer Bay behind
a big dune.
DAY 3
We venture North of Spencer
Bay and start tackling the big dunes, which will probably take us the whole day,
until we reach the sea again some 40km north of Spencer Bay. Here we take you to
the reef of Knoll points and stand on the edge of Oyster Cliffs which offers
stunning views. From here on we venture into a deep gulley at the sea to set up
camp for the night. Spectacular coastline with unusual rock formations can be
explored.
DAY 4
This day leads us over the
cliffs past huge whale bones scattered on the beach. We travel all the way to
Easter Point, where diamond mining took place in 1924. An old truck with wooden
spoke-wheels near an old shack can be viewed as well as the remains of steamship
“Balgowan Castle”, which ran aground in 1904. Our journey continues along the
beach, where the dunes will run into the sea. This route provides some extreme
4x4 challenges to pass. Our way then leads us through some magnificent dunes to
Sylvia Hill, where lunch will be served on the edge of a cliff. This is our
turning point and we now travel in a south-easterly direction through a ‘Nara’
street past an old landing strip used by the famous diamond pioneer, M Kahan,
until we reach the “Narabush Street” , where we will set up camp for one last
night in the middle of the desert between the ‘Nara forest’ bushes.
DAY 5
On the last day we travel
southeast towards “Koichab” Pan, crossing some interesting challenging dune
belts here and there with the “Grande final”’ being the 200m high red dunes of “Koichab”.
This is very scenic and a photographers dream. One last, final big dune, which
will separate “the boys” from “the girls”, will end our 5day dune adventure.
