Blasskranz Guest Farm |
The Blasskranz Guest Farm lies in the heart of the Naukluft Mountains. Wilderness hikes, excursions to the largest cave in the Naukluft and 4X4 off road trails let you experience the breath taking landscapes and the rate Hartmann mountain zebra. Camping is possible near the farm house and at the executive remote camp site. Specialized Guided tours to Sossusvlei and the Naukluft Plateau, are only some of the many activities hosts offer. Hosts are looking forward to your visit.
The Blässkranz Farm, run by Yvonne and Karsten Schwabe, lies along the northern reaches of the Naukluft. Access to the farm leads one down the only thoroughfare of the mighty mountain massif, the C14. In the otherwise relatively inaccessible Naukluft, a valley of several kilometres in length was formed. It is in this valley that one will find the farmhouse. Surrounded by precipitous crags almost 2,000 m in height, Blässkranz is an ideal point of departure for mountaineer and hiker alike. This is prime habitat for mountain zebra, kudu and leopard. Among the many bird species found here is the majestic black eagle. Another very rewarding excursion is the Märker Cave, which was used by the Bushmen (San people) in earlier times.
At the southern end of the valley there is an approximately 100-m-high ledge, which is constituted of so-called travertine, a rock which projects prominently from the surrounding mountain slopes. It is a limestone that is formed when the calcium carbonate is precipitated form water that emerges from the mountain by warming and evaporation. The white carbonate band – which, from a distance, resembles the white blazes that horses or blesboks have - gave the farm its name. The Peter Bridgeford Trail leads onto a flattened promontory in this travertine and further on, deep into the Naukluft massif. From the plateau one has an exquisite view of the valley. At the foot of Blaze Head one finds a romantically wild campsite.
