Trails in Namib Naukluft Park |
Olive Trail
Time Needed: 4 to 4.5 hrs - 11km
Departure Point: Car park, then a 12km drive back to BüllsPort
Difficulty: Quite difficult, some rock hopping, and the famous "chains"
Highlights: Views, flora and bird life
What to Take: Hat, good closed shoes and at least 2 litres of water each
This is a circular self-guided trail situated in the
Naukluft Park. It takes about 4 to 5 hrs to complete. It starts off with a
climb to the top of a small plateau with a magnificent view, where you then
climb down into a gorge, which you follow for most of the way. Then towards
the end, after the chains, you join onto a rough 4X4 track that leads you back
to the car park where you left your car. Quiver trees as well as Euphorbia can
be seen in the gorge. Love Birds, Mountain Zebra and Klipspringer are
sometimes seen on the hike. Terrain gets quite difficult once in the gorge,
where you have to climb onto and over a few large rocks, and towards the end
there is quite a tricky bit involving a chain. A beautiful but exciting hike
nevertheless. At least 2 litres of water each should be taken along, as well
as good walking shoes and a hat. Please remember to report at the office
before doing either of the hikes in the Naukluft Park as otherwise no one will
know where you are.
Waterkloof Trail
Time Needed: about 6 to 7 hrs - 17 km
Departure Point: Naukluft Park Office, try not to leave BüllsPort later than 8:00am. And please don't forget to report at the office before starting the hike due to safety reasons
Point of Arrival: Naukluft Park Office
Difficulty: Difficult, long walk with steep climbs and some rock hopping
Highlights: Great views, bird life, fauna and flora
What to take: Good closed walking shoes, a hat and something to eat as well as a minimum of 3 litres of water each. Don't forget binoculars
This is a circular self-guided trail situated in the
Naukluft Park. It takes about 6 to 7 hrs to complete. It starts and ends at
the office. You start by walking upstream in the Naukluft river through some
beautiful gorges, often filled with rock pools after the rains. You have great
scenery and the chance of seeing animals. Klipspringer as well as Mountain
Zebra and a variety of birdlife and flora can be seen on this hike. Walking in
general is easier than that of the Olive Trail. But the distance and a steep
climb or two make this one more difficult. At least 3 litres of water each
should be taken along, as well as a hat and good walking shoes. Binoculars and
maybe a small lunchpack should also not be forgotten.
NB: Can be done as a short introduction to the Naukluft Mountains if
one hikes only as far as the "last water". This takes up to 1 1/2 hrs. You can
swim there and turn back to the starting point.
