Op My Stoep Lodge Oranjemund |
Op My Stoep Lodge is located in the oasis town of Oranjemund in the Namib Desert, southern Namibia - the oldest desert in the world and is also bordered by the Orange River and the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of the river, thus its German name Oranjemund, meaning “Mouth of the Oranje”. Oranjemund was established back in 1936, following Hans Merensky's discovery of significant alluvial diamond deposits on the north bank of the Orange River and the adjacent northern coastline. Oranjemund has a mild desert climate with pleasant temperatures throughout the year, therefore making it an attractive and popular location for year-round visits.
The original building
was built in 1971, but was used as the Horse Riding Club, where all horse
enthusiasts would come together to share their passion and love for the
elegant four-legged animal. In 2006 the OP MY STOEP lodge was built on the old
gymkhana and show jumping grounds, with the restaurant and bar being started
earlier.
The owner and creative mind behind OP MY STOEP – Fanie Smit – was born as
Esteban Alberto Smit in Argentina, migrated to South Africa with his mother at
the young age of 17. He then moved to Windhoek, South West Africa to complete
his Trade Qualifications for Auto Electrical. Fanie found his way to
Oranjemund, where he worked for CDM and then started an Auto Electrical
Business, but found his passion to be in catering and hospitality, cooking
since 1988, starting with catering at the Off-Road Club (Log Cabin) and then
he bought the Desert Inn restaurant and transformed it to become Don Esteban.
After Fanie sold Don Esteban, he envisioned a restaurant with lodgings
offering a luxurious yet family orientated experience, thus the birth of OP MY
STOEP.
Lodge
The accommodation is placed around its own oasis of green grass and koi pond, offering a restful place to read a book, tap away on a laptop, soak up the sun’s rays or just swing peacefully back-and-forth on the self-made garden swing, while watching the graceful movements of the koi’s and occasional visit of a few of the many bird species who have made the Orange River banks their home.
OP MY STOEP offers many
amenities to help make your life as stress free as possible, from laundry
services to full a-la-carte and licensed bar with restaurant to free Wireless
Internet Access, computer facilities and scanning/copying/printing is also
available.

This homely, yet
luxurious lodge offers 12 rooms, of which there are 9 single rooms, 3 double

great dessert, cake and pudding maker.
Dining
The restaurant is
self-decorated with touches of personality such as guitars, saddles,
typewriters, tins, chairs made with wood and kudu horns, as well as a vast
collection of over 1900 caps. The furniture is all handmade and well-placed to
ensure the dining experience of your life, as your appetite is satisfied by a
fantastic a-la-carte menu which offers your tongue such choices as mussels in
white wine sauce, garlic snails with fresh bread, crumbed mushrooms for
starters; to Pampas Argentinean Steak, Espetada with garlic sauce dripping
down the skewer, fish dishes and much more for the main filler; to deserts
that change on a regular basis. Fanie loves to offer off-the-menu specials
with loads of personality and flavours that cannot be put in words, so be sure
to ask him to savour one of his latest creations.
He fuses the taste of Argentina with Namibian cuisine that will leave your
taste buds tingling and wanting more.
