Hogsback
is situated in the Amatola Mountains of the Eastern Cape Province, about
1300m above sea level. By road from Queenstown (to the north), Grahamstown
(to the south) and East London (to the east), it is approximately one and a
half hours drive. Hogsback, with its wonderful mountains, spectacular views,
mystical forests, swirling mists, beautiful birds, butterflies and
mushrooms, and its often glorious sunsets, has an air of enchantment and
tranquility all of its own. It is the ideal holiday destination for nature
lovers. Hogsback is well known for its beautiful spring, summer and autumn
gardens. It often snows in winter and this is always a reason for much
excitement and celebration!
Once in Hogsback, you are surrounded by mountains and indigenous forests
with waterfalls and magical streams. You can explore Hogsback by means of
hiking trails, short or long walks, leisurely drives, or by mountain bike.
Hosts can organize horseriding and mountain bike hire. There are superb hikes
and mountain bike rides through beautiful indigenous forests, along magical
forest streams, past some stunning waterfalls, with spectacular views of the
mountains and the valley below. We can organize trout fishing in various
dams in Hogsback. There are two game reserves within 60kms of Hogsback. At
the local hotels there are swimming pools, a tennis court and bowling green,
which may be used with permission.
“The Edge”: At "The Edge", hosts have 12 cottages in the large 15 acre
garden of a private property. From the edge of the cliff, which runs along
the side of the property, there are spectacular views of surrounding
mountains and a deep gorge with beautiful indigenous forest and fascinating
swirling mists and cloud formations.

ACCOMMODATION:
"Over the Edge" Thatched Rondavel - Tucked away on the edge of the
cliff, this romantic and cozy, private thatched rondavel has the most
spectacular views, a king size bed with feather duvet, two comfy old leather
chairs in front of the log fire, charming old furniture and an abundance of
character. It has an open plan kitchen and separate bathroom. Perfect for
honeymoons or romantic getaways!
"Thunderstone" Thatched Rondavel - This luxurious, rondavel is
furnished with beautiful old furniture, and is only meters away form the
edge of the cliff and has the best view in Hogsback! Look over the gorge at
indigenous rain forests and waterfalls, even from the king size bed with its
feather duvet! Sip a glass of wine on the veranda or in front of the log
fire and watch the spectacular sunsets, and birds of prey, Cape Parrots and
Louries as they make their way back to their nests. The rondavel has an open
plan kitchen and a bathroom with a double shower. The ideal hideaway for
honeymooners and romantics wanting something extra special.
“Heaven's Above!" - Thatched Cottage - This is our most special
cottage. It is perched on the edge of the cliff and indigenous forest and
has an unbelievably dramatic view, even from the lovely deep bath! It is
luxuriously furnished with king-size bed, feather duvet, and two comfy
leather couches to relax on in front of the log fireplace. Commune with
nature on the beautiful wooden deck (which takes you right to "the edge")
while marveling at the spectacular views! The perfect spot for breakfast, a
sundowner, or to simply relax and soak up the sun. This must be one of the
best locations in the country. Seeing is believing! Perfect for
honeymooners!
"Lavender" Thatched Rondavel - This luxurious, large rondavel is
really exceptional, and ideal for celebrating a special occasion. Surrounded
by large trees and lavender, it overlooks the formal, walled rose and herb
garden. It has a luxurious king size bed with feather duvet and mohair
blanket, beautiful old furniture including a comfortable old leather lounge
suite in front of the log fire. It has an open plan kitchen and a bathroom
with a double shower. Enjoy the beautiful garden setting or take a 50m
stroll to the edge of the cliff and admire the view.
"Fire-Fly" Cottage - Close to the edge, this luxurious, romantic and
cosy cottage for two also has spectacular views, two comfy chairs in front
of the log fire-place, a king-size bed with feather duvet, and a huge bath
big enough for two! The veranda, from where you can sit and watch swirling
mists and beautiful sunsets, also has an undercover braai.
"Stargazer" Cottage - 'Stargazer' is a lovely, cosy thatched cottage
with beautiful views from every room. It has two bedrooms both en-suite. One
bedroom has a double bed, the other, two single beds. All the beds have
fluffy feather duvets and electric blankets. The comfortable lounge and
diningroom has a huge stone fireplace, and together with the thatched roof
and beautiful old furniture, "Stargazer" cottage has a lovely, relaxed
feeling. It also has fully equipped kitchen, and veranda with undercover
braai.
"Sugar-Bird" Cottage - This is a two bedroom cottage with open plan
living area and separate bathroom. It has a queen-size bed in the one room
and two single beds in the other. It has a log fire, old world furniture,
and lots of character. It is a short stroll to the edge of the cliff, which
is the perfect spot for sundowners or to simply relax with a good book!
"Kudu Shack" - is a small and snug cottage for two. It has a double
bed, two comfortable chairs in front of the log fire, fully equipped open
plan kitchen and separate bathroom with a shower. It is a short stroll to
the edge of the cliff and fantastic views.
Daedalus' Shelter and Minos' Keep - In Greek mythology, Daedalus
built the Labyrinth in which King Minos kept his Minataur (half man and half
bull). Close to our Labyrinth, these two separate, lovely cosy cottages each
sleep two and are only a 50m stroll to the edge of the cliff and the
viewsight. Both cottages have beautiful old furniture, en-suite bedrooms,
open plan living areas with a fire place, and are fully equipped for
self-catering. Daedalus' Shelter has two single beds, and Minos' Keep has a
queensize bed. All beds have snug feather duvets.
Birch Wood and Apple Tree Cottages - These two garden cottages are
semi-detached. Each unit has its own en-suite bathroom with shower, and a
fully equipped kitchen. Each sleeps two, Birch Wood has a double bed and
Apple Tree has two single beds, side by side. Both are very comfortably
furnished, have cosy feather duvets, and a comfy couch between the bed and
the log fireplace. Each has its own braai area. The cottages are about 150
meters from the viewpoint.
En- Suite Rooms: Ideal for overnight or short stays, this row of 4
en-suite rooms each has its own entrance. The bathrooms have showers, not
baths. These rooms are not equipped for self-catering, but each has a
kettle, cups, and tea and coffee. Bedding and towels are provided. The rooms
do not have TV's. Three rooms have double beds and one has 2 single beds.
Guests are welcome to use the lounge and dining area at Tea Thyme.
