Springfontein Guest House Springfontein |
Springfontein Guest House is very conveniently situated on the outskirts of the little village and thus it is quiet and surrounded by fields of Free State. The village of Springfontein is 3 kilometres off the main N.1 highway on the old Pretoria / Cape Town tar road. It is 145 kilometres south of Bloemfontein and 80 kilometres north of Colesberg. As such it is excellently positioned for travellers needing a stopover on their journey between Cape Town and Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban or Pretoria and Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Port Elizabeth or visa versa. The guesthouse has been completely redecorated and the garden has been subject to a comprehensive replanting programme. A swimming pool has been built which guests find a welcome relief after a long and hot journey. In winter guests can relax in the warm sitting room or go for a brisk walk before enjoying a delicious dinner. Throughout the house there is an extensive collection of South African and European paintings and objet d'art. Springfontein House is also well suited for guests to visit for a few days to use as a base while visiting some of historic and interesting nearby villages or inspecting the local Anglo-Boer war graveyards. Springfontein House is graded a 4 star guesthouse by The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. The establishment is also top rated " Superior" by the AA Travel Guides and is featured in the Greenwood guide as well as the Portfolio Bed and Breakfast Collection.
The Owner of Springfontein House, Graeme Wedgwood, has been in the hospitality industry for 10 years. Graeme used to run Smithfield House, which he brought to life with cultivated, Epicurean zeal. Well, the same applies here at his new home. Those with a taste for fine living will find a kindred spirit in Graeme, a man whose love of house and garden, countryside, good company, food and wine now sets the tone at Springfontein House. Through glass doors is a slate-floored, frond-filled sunroom and an incarnadine dining room, with Georgian tables and silver candelabras. In the bedrooms the curtains are silk, the towels soft and the comfy beds have crisp linen, plump pillows and mohair throws. Outside, white walls dazzle and creepers climb above the stoep; there's a bricked patio and colourful flower-beds, a pool and a series of fishponds. But the reason you come here is to be looked after, and arriving from the biscuity veld, you'll feel lucky indeed.
