Hotel Attractions
With so many historical and natural attractions in the area, these are just
some of the places of interest in and around Pietermaritzburg: Tatham
Art Gallery
Opposite the City Hall in the Old Supreme Court Building, with a vast
collection of 19th and 20th century British, French and South African Art.
Howick Museum and J&J Stained Glass Co.
Get an idea of how the early settlers lived. From furniture and medicine to
sangomas and squatter houses. Pop across the road to J & J Stained Glass
works and watch stained glass being made, from suncatchers and lamps to
windows and terrariums.
Macrorie House Museum: This is the only mid Victorian (1863 - 1880)
double storey house that is open to the public in Pietermaritzburg, with
Victorian style furniture and artifacts.
Natal Railway Museum: A collection of old steam trains, coaches and
wagons and most aspects of steam and train travel in KwaZulu-Natal.
Artifacts from 1860, books and photos are on display. Kids can crawl around
inside the trains and there are train rides every second Sunday of each
month from the Hilton Station.
For the outdoor adventurer, the 95m high Howick Falls are worth a visit and
can be viewed from a platform in front. There is also an hour-long walk down
to the pools at the bottom of the falls. Alternatively, take the Half Day
Walking Tour and visit some of Pietermaritzburg's famous sites including the
Tatham Art Gallery, Legislature Building, Natal Museum, St Peter's
Cathedral, Mahatma Gandhi Statue outside the Colonial Building, City Hall
and many more.
