The Port-Wine Guest House Calitzdorp |
The Port-Wine Guest House is
located in Calitzdorp, Western Cape, South Africa. The Dutch Reformed Church is a national monument
and the quaint back streets, lined with historic houses, reflect the mood of
times gone by. The fertile Gamka valley with its neat and well-kept
vineyards,
orchards and ostrich farms is the pride of the area. Calitzdorp boasts 3
well-known wine cellars - Boplaas, Die Krans and Calitzdorp Wine Cellar -
which are known country-wide for their excellent variety of white, red,
dessert and champion Port wines. The annual Port Festival has become a
highlight of entertainment and has gained for the village the title "Port
Wine Capital" of South Africa. The Village is also a good place for fresh
and dried fruit in season. There are many tourist attractions - for example:
8 major mountain passes within a 75km radius. In a nutshell - tranquility,
a healthy sunny climate, hospitality and superb scenic beauty make
Calitzdorp a Paradise awaiting discovery.
Fauna, Flora and Geology: Names like Buffelsvlei and Gamkariver (Khoi
for lion) recall the wild animals that once roamed the Calitzdorp district.
Today one of the most endangered large mammals, the Cape Mountain Zebra
(fewer than 800) is preserved in the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve. Calitzdorp
has the highest concentration in the southern hemisphere of the Pale
Chanting Coshawk - the only polyandrous raptor. Other birdlife abounds
(approx. 250 species) as does a great variety of butterflies. Flowering
shrubs such as wild pomegranate, Portulacus, lye-bush, milkweed and Chinese
Lantern shelter many smaller plants and succulents including the Crassulas
and unusual Haworthias.
Red/orange sandstones and mudstones were laid down between 250 and 350
million years ago as sediments beneath water and then tilted by powerful
pressures. As they dried out in more recent times they provided a landscape
of extraordinary colours. Spectacular mountains of Enon-Conglomurate -
locally known as the Red Stone Hills - can be seen between Calitzdorp and
Oudtshoorn and offer hikers some excellent lookout points.
