Oaklands Country Manor
Drakensberg |
Within 3 hours of getting off your airplane you can be sitting by our pool
sipping a cool glass of Chardonnay. The very next day you can be discovering
the tragedy of the Battle of Spioenkop. The day after can be spent at leisure
at our lodge, tanning by the pool as our helpful and friendly staff pamper to
your every need. This really is a home from home. Oaklands Country Manor is an
award winning Guest Lodge situated at a height of almost 2000 metres / 6000
feet on the Drakensberg escarpment, midway between Johannesburg (3 Hours) and
Durban (2 1/2 Hours) and only 7 kms from the highway at the top of Van Reenen's
Pass. It is the ideal place to start or end your holiday being so close to
Johannesburg International Airport. You can enjoy almost everything that South
Africa has to offer without spending your whole holiday in a car or plane.
Oaklands serves as an ideal base from which to explore the region of northern
Natal and the eastern Free State. Both areas are renowned for their
outstanding natural beauty set in breathtaking mountain (Berg) scenery. Within
easy driving distance two of South Africa’s national parks are to be found.
The Royal Natal lies at the northern end of the Drakensberg World Heritage site
and is world famous, as it was the location for the filming of "Zulu". The
majestic Amphitheatre colossus towers above you as you enjoy beautiful hiking
trails. The Golden Gate National Park nestles in the foothills of the Maluti
Mountains on the northern border of Lesotho and is equally stunning.
The area is also rich in history and culture, not to mention the exquisite
flora and fauna. Above all, within 2 hours driving, 13 battlefields and
historic sites of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War tours can be found, which are a
specialty of the lodge. For those who do not have an interest in history,
there are numerous other pursuits and activities to satisfy you, such as Hot
Air Ballooning, Fishing and 4x4 Trails.
It also serves as a gateway to Natal, which is proving a popular holiday
destination for the independent traveller with its wide variety of fascinating
attractions and superb holiday experiences. These vary from the history and
culture of the Zulu people to the full game watching experience, breathtaking
mountain scenery and unspoilt coastline. If you have no intention of driving,
then there is as much to do as you like or as little. We offer you 13
attractive en-suite rooms set in a beautiful garden. Our atmospheric pub, The
Last Post, is an ideal place to slake your thirst after a long day or you can
listen to the sounds of the wilderness on the bar terrace. Our extensive wine
cellar features only the best of South African wines. Our cuisine is award
winning (Portfolios Chef’s Hat) and caters for the international palate. We
invite you to savour your meals in our colourful dining room or by the camp
fire under the stars.
Other Activities: For those with energy to spare there are plenty of
things to do such as walking, bird watching, riding, mountain biking, swimming
and tennis. Soak up the magnificent views as you stroll through our 300 acre
park and beyond. This is the sort of terrain that will leave you breathless in
more ways than one.
Kids Corner - Facilities for children of all ages! How many times have
you heard the phrases; ‘Children by arrangement only’, "Children not welcome."
And "Only children over 12 years of age."? Why is it that it is so hard to
find accommodation establishments that genuinely cater for children of all
ages? If you are looking for somewhere that truly welcomes children of all
ages, whilst at the same time doing their utmost to enable adults to enjoy
their own peace and privacy, then Oaklands is the place for you. Jamie and
Anna Bruce, the owners of Oaklands, have children of their own of all ages and
therefore understand what parents are looking for when they go on a family
holiday or break. That does not mean to say that they do not also appreciate
that children can be intrusive and demanding at times. The skill is to find an
accommodation between these priorities and that is what we strive to achieve
here at Oaklands.
Quad Biking Mountain Biking: The main objective is to keep kids
occupied and to provide plenty for them to do. We also encourage kids who
would otherwise spend their time in front of a computer or TV screen to do
something a little bit more adventurous and energetic. There are a host of
activities for children to do, mainly outdoors, such as the jungle gym, tree
house, trampoline, pony rides, mountain biking, swimming and a myriad of
outside games that they can play. The world is their oyster and fun is limited
only by their imagination. Mum and Dad can also get involved and many happy
hours can be spent as a family going for walks, playing games of all sorts and
just spending quality time together. When was the last time you all did that?
We also encourage kids to be a little independent and to allow mum and dad to
enjoy their own time together. We have a children’s playroom that is stacked
with toys, games and goodies so that the kids can entertain themselves, if
necessary under the supervision of our very capable and experienced
babysitters. At the end of a long and action-packed day, you can put your kids
to bed and then retire to the hotel for a night on your own for a change,
whilst your kids slumber under the watchful eye of a babysitter.
