Mudlark River Front Lodge is situated on a 22
hectare property, part of the Lower Breede River Conservancy and nestles on
the river bank about 2 kilometers from the tiny villages of Witsand and
Infanta both situated on the opposite bank of the river mouth. This
situation is unique in that no other habitation can be seen and the lodge
has magnificent views up and down the estuary. The lodge faces north and is
protected from the prevailing sea breezes. The lodge is surrounded by fynbos
on three sides and the river in front. The Mudlark River Front Lodge offers
exclusivity to residing guests, with individually decorated private rooms.
Host menu is renowned for its excellence using products sourced fresh from
the sea, river and surrounding farms. Mudlark River Front Lodge is a perfect
location for relaxing and exploring the Overberg area.
Some of the main attractions in the Breede River Estuary are: This is
one of the best whale watching areas in the South Africa, known as the"
Whale nursery of South Africa". Whales swim close to the cliffs at Cape
Infanta and seem to be within touching distance (130 whales during the 2005
census). The Breede River is a fishing hot-spot with Kob of up to 50 kg,
Spotted Grunter, and Garrick up to 12kg regularly caught. As the angling is
so good the Breede River is known as the "Home of the Big Kob". De Hoop
Marine Reserve a World Heritage Site is lodge's neighbour. An amazing 196 bird
species can be found around the lodge, river bank, and coast. This area is
also part of the Cape Floral Kingdom with hundreds of varieties of fynbos
and renosterveld.
There are various stunning walks and activities on the Breede River i.e.
horse riding, skiing, diving, surfing and sunset cruises. Mudlark Riverfront
lodge exudes a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and consists of a central
timber lodge containing the entertainment and dining areas. The bedrooms are
situated on both sides of the lodge and the communal dining area overlooks
the river so it is breakfast with a view. There is a large comfortable
lounge with a fireplace for those chilly winter evenings and DSTV is
provided. There is also a relaxing lounge with river views and its friendly
fisherman's bar where one can spend the evening in the company of new found
friends leads out on to a large covered timber leisure deck with exceptional
views where one can laze the day away bird spotting or watching the
happenings on the river or enjoy sundowners as one watches the sun dip
behind the Potberg mountain.
With accommodation for a maximum of ten guests this is really getting away
from the crowds. All double rooms are also off timber construction have
beautiful panoramic views of the estuary and the surrounding fynbos five
en suite bedrooms are thoughtfully decorated; some with private balconies.
All have en suite bathrooms heaters and fans and separate entrances.
Charters: Mudlark River Front Lodge offers chartered cruises. Whether
it's the excitement of deep sea fishing or a leisurely sundowner cruise
along the estuary you are after hosts can cater for your needs. Hosts offer both
river and ocean excursions. The boat is a 520C Supercat Mudlark equipped
with all safety equipment, GPS, fish finder and Shimano tackle. Both the
estuary and the ocean in the San Sebatian Bay area offer superb fishing.
Estuarine fish including Kob up to 50kg, Spotted Grunter up to 6kg, Garrick
up to 12kg, Steebras up to 8kg as well as Elf and Cape Stumpnose. Out at sea
participants routinely catch Yellowtail, Yellowfin Tuna, Skip Jack or Bonito, Kob,
Cape Salmon or Geelbek, Red Roman, Red Stumpnose, Santer, Red Steenbras and
Mussel Cracker. Of course sharks are also plentiful. These fish are all
caught at different times of the year depending on the season.
The charters are between 5 and 7 hours in duration. All equipment and
fishing tackle is of the best quality and hosts provide bait, snacks and cool
drinks. Lodge's skipper has 20 years experience fishing these waters and has
fished international competitions representing the South African Deep Sea
Angling Association in international fishing competitions on many occasions.
Hosts have other options for fishing the river. You may for example want to
hire a dinghy with 30hp engine and Gily to guide you to the hot spots!
