Exploring the koppies in the area is an archaeological delight. These reveal
stone-age artifacts and other interesting fragments of the past. Those who
enjoy the Great Outdoors of the Great Karoo will enjoy studying the fauna and
flora of the veld around the town.
The Magic Mountain: Colesberg lies in typical Karoo veld and is
surrounded by koppies (little hills). The most famous is Coleskop (early
travellers called it "Towerberg" meaning "Magic Mountain"), which can be seen
from a distance of over 40 kilometres.
Monuments and Museums: The Colesberg-Kemper Museum is one of several
national monuments in Colesberg. It houses fascinating relics of the town's
rich history. Among its exhibits is a collection of fossils dating back to the
first reptiles which inhabited this area and a photographic display on the
Karoo Nomads (donkey ‘karretjie' people). Walking tours of the district and
farms are arranged.
Water Sports Enthusiasts: The Gariep Dam attracts outdoor and water
sports enthusiasts and tours of the dam wall are conducted regularly.
