exploring the many ancient pans in our area and taking in the panoramic views of
our waterhole.
With all this at your fingertips, it’s hard not to understand that Khutse
Kalahari Lodge is your “Gateway to the Kalahari.”
Accommodation
Khutse means "place to kneel down and drink", and we invite you to drink in this
beautiful part of the world in style and magnificence. With its unique African
architecture, Khutse Lodge really puts one in nature’s cradle. Opened in 2003 on
Bakwena tribal land, the lodge now has twenty four thatched rondavels with
either double or twin beds including two family rondavels, which can accommodate
two adults and two children. Each rondavel comes with en-suite bathroom. Simple,
yet stylish decor ensure maximum comfort and opulence whilst remaining right on
nature's doorstep. Experience the bush in true luxury.
The main lodge is situated on the highest point in the area with an elevated bar
and deck which allows for a spectacular panoramic view over the surrounding bush
and waterhole. We also offer the only swimming pool in the Kalahari Desert! The
sunrises, sunsets and starry night skies experienced in Khutse are like no
other.
Activities
Activities on offer are a complete range of bush experiences from game drives
into the reserve, fly camping and the popular bush breakfast. Or you could try
our guided walks that interpret the tracks and signs of the wild. All activities
are focused into the Khutse Game Reserve. Khutse is renowned for its ancient
pans that once formed part of Africa’s largest inland lake. The waterholes now
attract a wide variety of game and bird-life and in turn attracting the
predators including leopard, cheetah and our famous black mane lion.
Absorb the local culture and traditions of the San (Basarwa) people by enjoying
our compulsory bushman experience and reflect on centuries of the local history
of the land. The Bushmen are hunter-gatherers, who for thousands of years
supported themselves in the desert through their skills.
They hunt (mainly various kinds of antelope) but their daily diet has always consisted more of the fruits, nuts and roots which they seek out in the desert.
They make their own temporary homes from wood that they gather.
Our popular nature walks will bring
you into the bush where you will meet the large variety of African bird-life
that are specific to our area.
History & culture
The ‘Bushmen’ are the oldest inhabitants of Southern Africa. They are
traditionally hunter-gatherers and have lived in harmony with nature for the
better part of 20, 000 years. The ‘Bushmen’ have supported themselves through
various hunting methods and found fruit, nuts and roots. They live in temporary
homes made from wood that they have gathered. Not only are the ‘Bushmen’ famous
for their rock art but also their myths and folklore. Bushmen know how to
captivate an audience with their suspense, humour and wit.
At Khutse, we take an in depth look into the past, present and future of the
‘Bushmen’ of the Central Kalahari Desert. We offer our popular ‘Bushman Walk’
which allows you to observe the culture and nature of these hunter-gatherers. We
also plan to add a ‘Bushman Cultural Centre’ to our lodge.
Here is a list of things that we at Khutse recommend you should bring on your
trip:
Binoculars
Camera
Insect repellant
Sunblock
Sun glasses
A hat
Lip balm
Moisturising cream
