Spitzkoppe
fossil trail
Very interesting site where 280
million years old fossils of one the earliest reptiles Messosaurus tenduins can
be observed is located 40 kilometres north-east of Keetmanshoop on the road C17 (first
take road 29).
There are about 10 fragments at the site and guided tours are conducted
daily. Duration of the tour is approximately 1.5 hours.
The specimens at the site are older than true Karoo reptiles found in South Africa by
several million years and older than other known Messosaurus species that was
found in Southern America.
The length of the guided tour is around 1 kilometre. Accommodation (camping site
with ablution facilities) are available.
Other activities include 10 kilometre self-guided trail and 12 kilometre 4x4 route.
