ACCOMMODATION: Cypress Cottage Bed & Breakfast offers the discerning
traveler the opportunity to indulge in the relaxed atmosphere and elegant
comfort of an 18th century Cape Colonial homestead. Accommodation consists
of four elegantly furnished and very spacious units with their own private
entrances, steps away from the swimming pool. Be it the cozy Country Room
(sleeps 4), the Mediterranean Room (sleeps 2 + 1), or a choice of two
African Rooms (sleeps 2 & 2 + 1), all units have en-suite bathrooms and are
fully equipped with comfortable beds, tea and coffee facilities, a
television, m-net, air-conditioning, fridges and the personal touch of fresh
flowers. Enjoy a generous cooked breakfast. Children welcome. Secure parking
bays are conveniently situated at your doorstep.
During winter, when snow crowns the peaks of the Langeberg Mountains, hearty
country breakfasts are served in the family dining room with a log fire to
keep you company. During summer, the sparkling pool and beautiful garden
replenish a weary body and soul.
ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS: Swellendam, the third oldest magisterial
district in South Africa, nestling in the foothills of the majestic
Langeberg mountain, is a charming town with a fascinating history.
Strategically situated on the N2, approximately 240km from both Cape Town
and George has much to offer visitors interested in heritage and culture,
architecture, wildlife and outdoor adventure. It is also an ideal base from
which to explore the neighbouring Southern Cape, Breede River Valley and the
Klein Karoo. Visitors to Cypress Cottage are within walking distance from
the many old buildings that have been declared National Monuments, one of
the most interesting being the Dutch Reformed 'Moederkerk' with its eclectic
architectural features and the famous Drostdy Museum Complex (1747)
consisting of several historical buildings, a restaurant and gift shop.
Visitors are welcome at the studios of well-known potters, the Sulina Faerie
Sanctuary, preserved flower center at Stormsvlei and the Wildebraam
Youngberry Liqueur Farm where the famous Braam liqueur is produced. Wildlife
and outdoor adventurers are invited to visit the nearby National Park and
Nature Reserves. Bontebok National Park (7 km from Swellendam) provides
sanctuary for herds of bontebok antelope, as well as other small buck
species and Mountain Zebra. A total of 126 different bird species have also
been identified here. Marloth Nature Reserve is a botanist's dream with an
abundance of wild flowers and fynbos. Hiking trails have been established.
De Hoop / Potberg Nature Reserve has seven distinct ecosystems and is and
excellent spot from which to view the Southern Right whales with their
calves from June to November.
For the sports lover, there is the usual sporting facilities like tennis
courts, a squash court and bowling greens. In addition Swellendam offers
horse trails and mountain biking in the forests, canoeing and river rafting
on the Breede River, various water activities on the Buffeljags Dam as well
as sunset cruises on either the dam or the river, including an excellent
9-hole golf course.
