Accommodation South Africa

Arniston Lodge is a double-storey thatched roof house designed to blend with the traditional cottages of the charming fishing village, Kassiesbaai. The Lodge is located just a few minutes' walk-away from the Arniston beaches and provides sleeping facilities for eight guests, hosting four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. Comfortable accommodation upstairs also offers a view of the sea, dunes and Kassiesbaai. Your friendly host, Erwin Brigl, speaks English, Afrikaans and German and will go out of his way to make your visit relaxing and memorable. The rooms are usually hired out individually, but the complete cottage may also be rented. For your pleasure there is a swimming pool, a well-stocked bar, a large open log fireplace and a protected barbeque area where you can cook locally caught Galjoen or Yellow Tail. A full continental or a cooked English breakfast is served every morning and evening meals can be had at the local restaurant or hotel. All you need to do is relax, explore and enjoy the stress-free and relaxed lifestyle of the unique surroundings that make up Arniston. Endless white sand beaches, a playground of unspoilt dunes, the huge tidal cave chiselled out of the sandstone cliffs and rustic thatched whitewashed cottages make the little seaside village of Arniston a restful holiday haven.

Arniston was named after the British East Indiaman that was wrecked off the coast in 1815 and the skeleton of the ship can still be seen stranded on the beach. Locals also know the town as Waenshuiskrans, named after the cave that is large enough to house several ox-wagons. For over two hundred years local fishermen have lived here in character filled cottages in the adjoining village of Kassiesbaai. Today the fishing and diving spots as well as the beautiful shells washed up on the beach are shared with visitors to the village. The area abounds with many bird species, including the elegant Blue Crane, South Africa’s national bird, and from June to December the Southern Right whale can be spotted off the coast. Nearby is the southernmost town in Africa, L’Agulhas, with its unusual lighthouse, Bredasdorp with an interesting shipwreck museum as well as the De Hoop Nature Reserve, an undisturbed veld populated by birds, Bontebok and other animals and the venue for South Africa’s Whale Trail, a pleasurable 5 day hike.
